STAY INTERVIEWS

PROJECT TITLE: Introduction to Stay Interviews

TOOLS USED IN DEVELOPMENT: Articulate Storyline

TIME: 3 weeks

CLIENT: IDOL Academy Personal Project

CHALLENGE: According to a LinkedIn survey, 61% of US employees are considering handing in their resignations in 2023.  This presents the question: How can companies retain valuable employees?

SOLUTION: Stay interviews are an opportunity for companies to meet with valuable employees to discuss what they enjoy about their work and potential reasons they would leave.  This course is built to prepare managers to lead a stay interview that will garner the most useful insight from their employee(s) to improve employee engagement and retain valuable talent. After completing the course, managers will be able to 1) define a stay interview and 2) identify the components that set an interview up for success.

PROCESS: I had spoken to a handful of Human Resource professionals regarding the increasing demand and attention on employee engagement in the corporate workplace. There is a massive shift in the global workforce as a result of the pandemic which affects the requirements people seek in regards to their job (work-life balance, pay, benefits, remote/hybrid schedules). We now see companies losing some of their top employees as these individuals search for opportunities that transition away from past working conditions.

This reminded me of a post I read on LinkedIn by Adam Grant discussing the power of stay interviews. He suggested companies shift their focus to spend more time interviewing active employees to gain insight on how to improve their work experiences and ultimately their productivity.

I began researching stay interviews and complied a document of all my findings. My course would be built with corporate managers as the intended audience since these individuals are often the ones conducting the interviews. From there, I organized my information surrounding 2 main learning objectives.  Using ChatGPT to create a structural outline of my course, I began scripting the narration and visual design in a storyboard. I arranged and rearranged the content so that the course began with foundational knowledge so learners could build up to actively practice conducting a stay interview (comprised of its 3 main components).

I worked in Storyline to create interactive and engaging opportunities for the learners to practice the content as they worked through the course. I iterated to trim excess information and any elements that didn't contribute to the project's overall learning objectives, cohesion, or flow. Copy was concise and narration was used to supplement content or directions that needed further explanation. Using feedback, I implemented changes to the overall visual design and improved user ability to self-navigate throughout the course. I tested the course with various learners, collected feedback, and again implemented changes. This time, I focused on branching scenarios.

The final version of this course is intended for use at companies training their managers to conduct stay interviews.  Implementing these interviews successfully will ultimately increase employee engagement and retain valuable employees.
